The typical efficiency of CFLs ranges from approximately 55 to 70 lumens per watt. LEDs however, have an average efficiency that stood at around 80 lumens per watt in mid-2013, but is now closer to 100 lumens per watt.

Cold cathode solutions provide radial smooth light output as does conventional fluorescent lighting but come with their downsides. Many LED products have been designed around standard LED technology but they usually result in hot spots that create multiple shadows.
